Jonathan Geer's debut album, Essex, creates a sonic landscape that sounds something like Royksopp, James Horner and Bjork stuffed into a high-powered blender and pureed against their will. The music seamlessly blends lush acoustic and orchestral elements with electronic beats and flourishes. The intricately crafted arrangements capture the emotional pull of a great film score while the subtle and tasteful electronic additions lend an otherwordly feel to the music. Essex is inspired by the story of the Nantucket whaleship by the same name. The music, like the story itself, is both fascinating and disturbing.
