Story Behind The Song
Needed a song for a big July 4th outdoor concert, wrote this one 5 days before. My husband is an honorably retired Navy Chaplain, so we had personal experience with "stories" like this one. Too close to home... powerful song.

Lyrics
Vs. 1:
Johnny watched his father wear his uniform with pride;
And he stood at brave attention on the day his daddy died.
Even as a young boy, somehow still he knew
How precious was the flag he waved?red, white, and blue.
And he?d sing?
Refrain: God bless America, my home, sweet home
She?ll always be my country, no matter where I roam.
I will march beneath her banner, and fight to keep
her strong.
God bless America?that was Johnny?s favorite song.
Vs. 2:
The years went by, and Johnny answered his country?s call to serve.
He said, ?I?m blessed to be an American, I?ve had more than I
deserve.
Momma, I know you?ll pray for me, and I?ll call you when I can.?
Then he hugged her close for as long as he could, and as he let go
of her hand,
He sang?

Bridge:
The chaplain told the story that she did not want to hear:
Johnny would not betray his men, his loyalties were clear.
As they watched the grand procession for this soldier, brave and true
He was draped in his favorite colors?red, white, and blue.
And they sang?
