He was a soldier, & a man of God - But his church said that war was a sin
So he submitted to his higher calling cause a war was about to begin
He was a rebel and a patriot - Like so many that fought for the cause
Became a general - & a good one at that - one of the best that there ever was
He was a natural born leader of men - He had sheer determination
He came from the state of Rhode Island but led the army throughout the nation

He was the right-hand man of Washington - & excellence was his name
And even when the odds were stacked against him he got the job done just the same
He was appointed the commander of the southern forces by Congress as a solution
And he worked hard & long & with few resources to help win the Revolution
He kept his men armed & well-supplied - He did all the little things
And as they fought the British he led them with pride - from Guilford to Eutaw Springs

Like Washington, Hamilton, Adams & The Marquis de Lafayette
It was Greene that forced Cornwallis to Yorktown when he couldn't fight anymore
So Washington could come and finish him off - The beginning of the end of the war
