Story Behind The Song
Gary was at an outdoor concert called Art On The Green and was chatting with Gerard Mathes, violinist and professor of music at North Idaho College Gary asked Gerard if he would like to have Gary compose a string trio for Gerard's group. Gerard said, "Yes" and Gary proposed that a Tango would be perfect for an outdoor summer venue. Gerard performed the premiere with his group The Micah Flats String Trio the summer of 2003. Then, The Nevsky String Quartet contacted Gary looking for a piece of music. Gary proposed The Gypsy Tango and the quartet recorded the piece in a studio in St Petersburg, Russia and in concert in Russia. Vern Windham premiered the piece on public radio station KPBX shortly thereafter. This piece of music is a crowd-pleaser wherever it is heard.
Song Description
Gypsy tango for String Trio evokes the wild, romantic and carefree life of the Roma. Picture yourself at night in front of a crackling wood fire in the fresh air. Behind you the wagon is sitting patiently waiting, while the cart horses whinny. A gypsy violinist plays a haunting melody, with passion and fire, while a beautiful girl dances and whirls around the campfire.

Lyrics
This is an instrumental piece and the following poem was inspired by the music:
The Gypsy Tango poem
(Intro - instrumental)
Dance,
Watch the Gypsy dance.
Makes me feel entranced, by his glance, full of fire.
Oh, what a passionate
Fire,
In his Gypsy eyes,
Makes me want to cry, want to die, in his glow.
Baila,
mira bailar el Gitano.
Cuando mueve me encanta,
la mirada
de fuego.
¡Que apasionados
ojos de fuego!
Quiero llorar,
y morir
en sus brazos.
Wouldn't it be very grand,
Joining his Gypsy band,
dancing across the land,
for a coin or two?
I want to be bold,
have a Gypsy soul.
Have him to hold,
me in his arms.
Tener la vida libre,
respirando el aire libre.
Volando en el aire,
como aguilas fuertes.
No quiero mas,
que juntarnos mas,
contigo para el futuro.
(Instrumental interlude)
Ah, Ah, Ah, Ah, ay ay.
La la la la la.
So____
¡Ay, Dios mio!
Storm, there's a storm, coming fast, will it last,
Oh, my blood's pounding faster and faster and Oh, my heart, my love.
Change, like the wind, like the dance, turning 'round, turning fast,
can this last? Where's my past? Oh, my God. Oh, my God.
Not alone, like a stone. Not so cold again.
La, la la la la la la la la.
(Instrument)
Fantasies go twirling through my head, they go faster and
(Instrument
Heaven lasts a moment and it's gone in the past or
Real,. was it real or fantasy, my deep desires, or taste of the wine to my brain.
Was I clouded by the flash of the drum in the band of The Gypsy Tango?
(Optional repeat)
(Instrumental interlude)
Love, is what I want,
Is what I need, to complete, my destiny.
Time is not my friend,
why must it be my enemy?
Amar es vivir.
Es completar el sino de mi ser.
Vivir
memorias,
retratos de polvo
para el vejez.
(Vocal cadenza)
Desire from the burning fire
binds me to him.
Takes me higher to the passion within me.
Should I stay or go? I don't know. Oh,
why can't I do both?
Why do I have to decide.
Pasión
llena mi pecho.
Soy perdida, Ay.
Mundos nos separan.
¿Que voy a hacer?
(Final verse ostinato, harp plays melody)
Dawn.
Now's the time for me to choose.
Do I stay or go?
Do I win or lose?
Fate.
What does fate have in store for me?
What adventures will I see?
Passion fills my breast.
Will I ever rest for the rest of my life.
Will the melody,
of the Tango stay with me,
for the rest of my life?
