Story Behind The Song
I got a letter from a court agency saying they were finally going to collect back child support from my ex. He called soon after asking if we could work something out. I thought about it. I didn't want or need the money - I wanted him to acknowledge he had not lived up to his responsibility. I decided to accept whatever he thought was reasonable and close this chapter. I wasn't prepared for the jolt of pain that I felt when he said he didn't feel he owed anything. But, honoring my commitment to myself, I said fine. Then, after we hung up the phone, I cried and cried, feeling a hurt I thought was long buried from the pain of our divorce. Once I calmed down, this song emerged. It is the first song Bill Bentley produced for me and made me realize that he was the right person to help me with my musical memoirs project. So I learned that some heartaches never fully disappear but they can lead to new possibilities.

Lyrics
A Lesson Learned
Just when you think that you can leave the past behind
It may be out of sight but never out of mind
I know you're humbled
I know you're sad
I know he hurt you
Hurt you so bad
Look at it as a lesson learned
Just stop and turn around
Look at it as a chance for you
To walk the higher ground
I really hate to see the pain you;re going through
But there's no way I can't take this weight from you
Think of it as a lesson, a lesson learned
Just when you think that he can't hurt you anymore
Somehow he finds the only unlocked, open door
You think it's finished
You think it's done
But it's not over
It's just begun
Look at it as a lesson learned
Just stop and turn around
Look at it as a chance for you
To walk the higher ground
I really wish that I could take this weight from you
But it's something you just have to suffer through
Think of it as a lesson, a lesson learned
Whaycha gonna do about it?
Whatcha gonna do about it?
Whatcha gonna do -- whatcha gonna do?
What else can you do about it?
But look at it as a lesson learned
Just stop and turn around
Look at it as a chance for you
To walk the higher ground
There's really no one who can take this weight from you
It's just something everybody must go through
Think of it as a lesson, a lesson learned
