Story Behind The Song
So one day I'm walking out to the parking lot outside the studio accompanied by my erstwhile producer, Bill Bentley. I sense that he is turning slightly right when, in fact, he decided to take a left. Well, because of my misinterpretation of his movements, we briefly collided (or "merged" as the song would say). I explained to Bill that it's like that movie...you know the one with Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr and the next thing you know, we're coming up with a song about cars and merging traffic (and Deborah Kerr, pronounced "CAR" in this song). The song was included in the musical "Old Folks At Home," co-written with my brother, Scott. (And it was a lot of fun performing it as a senile occupant of the retirement home!)

Lyrics
An Affair to Remember
Cruisin' down the avenue
Pulling right up next to you
I've got my signal on
Heading into your lane
Move on over and let me in
Come on and indulge my whim
Once we let the games begin
Our lives won't be the same
I can't explain this sudden urge
To pull into your lane and merge
But we're on the verge
Of something great
Chorus:
Like Cary Grant and Debbie Kerr
It's a once-in-a-lifetime thing
Like when a czarina meets a czar
And Camilla finally gets her king
I can feel it now - an affair to remember
See the stop light straight ahead
Let's get through before it turns red
Never, ever let it be said
We can't push it to the floor
Shifting now into second gear
I see no reason to linger here
Let's just keep driving, dear
'Til we can't drive anymore
You don't know how my heart aches
Every time you tap the brakes
It almost makes me feel
We're tempting fate
Chorus:
Bridge:
We're in the zone - in the zone
Don't want to be alone tonight
Come on and drive 'cause when we drive
I feel so alive - it just feels right
Getting close to the edge of town
Isn't it time that the top comes down?
All the better to hear the sound
Of the engine's roar
Chorus
