Story Behind The Song
It doesn't get much more autobiographical than this. From the nuclear family dynamic, to the realization that Mr. Right doesn't always take the form you might expect, to the relinquishing of futile pride. My brother, Scott, and I altered this quite a bit to fit the various characters in our first musical, "Paris on the Brain."

Lyrics
If I could write the story of my life
I'd start out with a husband and a wife
Who found themselves with four boys and this girl
Who challenged all they knew about the world
At the risk of facing father's wrath
I knew I had to follow my own path
And even though it's what I had to do
I wish that father realized it too
That's the story of my life,
A long and uphill fight
To somehow get at least one man
To accept me as I am
That's the story of my life
If I could write the story of my life
I'd skip the part about being a wife
And focus on the child who came to be
The only Mr. Right that's right for me
I only wanted peace and happiness
And wasn't willing to settle for less
And now that my own little boy has grown
I find that I am once again alone
That's the story of my life
A search for Mr. Right
And all the while I couldn't see
He was right in front of me
That's the story of my life
If I could write the story of my life
You'd read about the struggles and the strife
That come from letting pride stand in the way
Of being part of living day to day
Until one day I found my inner voice
And realized that I could made the choice
To stand up for the things that I hold dear
And that is why you see me standing here
That's the story of my life
And I have paid the price
But now it's time to take the lead
And fight for what I need
That's the story of my life
A long and uphill fight
To finally get at least one man
To accept me as I am
That's the story of my life
