Story Behind The Song
It's a simple song of heartbreak. When someone you love seems unwilling to work through the differences that arise, and to work at repairing hurt caused by both sides, what can you do? Every songwriter ends up composing songs about heartbreak...as a kind of joke, I picked a random number to represent where this might have fallen on my list, although, for me, it may be the most poignant song about failing love that I have yet written.
Song Description
I guess what is worth saying is that we have alot of ways of expressing the heartache we feel when a romantic relationship dies. It is one of the most common subjects for songwriters. Instead of searching for some clever metaphor for the way I felt, I wanted to just say, straightforwardly. "I'm sad." Because I truly was. I just poured my heart out in the lyrics, and wanted the music to be evocative enough to serve the lyrics. This is about as jazzy as I get, thanks to the players I used on this track. And although I haven't written 217 love songs, I was trying to make an ironic point that, this COULD have been "love song #217," which numerically could not POSSIBLY express the genuine pain and sadness I felt when this song came to be. It was Number ONE on my list of concerns at the time; hence, the irony.
