Story Behind The Song
My grandfather's best friend lost his wife to cancer and then spent 6 years in a bottle trying to join her. Every day he'd walk to the cemetery and sit for hours and talk like she was still with him. His children kept coming by, bringing food and talking about golf and baseball. He eventually joined her some 7 years after she passed.
Song Description
A song about the fact that all of us grow old. We can accept it or fight it but we all grow old. Time seems to march on faster and faster as we get older. The songs starts out talking about front porches and cheaper gasoline and ends up talking about an old oak tree that has withstood many storms over more than a hundred years splitting in two in a spring rain storm. The line in the song, Old trees break where once they used to sway, came from that old oak tree that fell in our yard.

Lyrics
Verse 1
I used to live life at a much slower pace
10 dollars worth of gas would take me a long way
I had a front porch and that's where I'd end each day
Time Marches On, Time Marches On
Verse 2
My hair used to be a darker shade of grey
Before I lost my hearing I could hear everything you say
My eyes were clearer before this recent haze
Time Marches On
Time Marches On
Chorus
Time Marches On, we grow old
Time Marches On, the warm get cold
Time Marches On and then we're gone
Verse 3
I've got children with children of their own
And I live with memories of when they were at home
I wish I knew then what I should have known
Time marches on
Time marches on
CHORUS
Time Marches On, we grow old
Time Marches On, the warm get cold
Time Marches On and then we're gone
Verse 4
Old rivers dry up a little more each day
Old trees break where they used to sway
Old people wish for good old younger days
Time Marches On and On and On..
Time Marches On
Time Marches On and On and On..
Time Marches On
