Lyrics
DADDY LOVED HIS SON
I was 9 years old
When they locked my daddy away
I still taste those little boy tears?I cried that day..
Everybody said it was a good thing he wouldn?t hurt anybody again
No body seemed to know or care they were talking bout my best friend..
I was too young to understand what the man had done
Just knew my daddy loved his son
I was an angry kid about 13 years old
When a changed man called me ?from that cell block telephone
Said I know I put you and your momma thru hell
But I found Jesus and salvation
Waiting for me in my prison cell..
I worked it out with the man upstairs,
And He forgives me for what I?ve done
And I pray in time you?ll look back and remember this?
Your daddy loved his son?
Another day passes in a living hell?
Razor wire fences surround him in an Alabama prison cell?
Another day passes ?he?s on his knees
Praying for a son? that he never sees?
That he never sees?.
He says Lord I know you?re there? hear my prayer..,
Don?t let my boy turn out like me?
I was a dangerous man by the time I hit 21
And I stood outside that Zippy Mart
With my hand on a loaded gun
The devil had his hooks in me
And I didn?t give a damn
Til? I saw a man with his son by his side
And a bible in his hand
It hit me like a bolt of lightning
I hit my knees and dropped my gun
When I heard my father?s prayer?like he was standing there..
I knew daddy loved his son.
Another day passes in a living hell..
Razor wire fences surround him in an Alabama prison cell
And another day passes ?he?s on his knees
Praying for a son? that he never sees?
That he never sees?.
He says Lord I know you?re there? hear my prayer?
Don?t let my boy turn out like me?
My son was five years old when we laid my daddy to rest?
There?s so much I?ve got to tell him.
I just can?t tell him yet..
So I said granddaddy went to live with God today?
And I held his little hand when we bowed our heads to pray?
He?s too young to understand who his granddaddy really was?
So I looked him in the eye and said
Son? He was just like me? a daddy who loved his son..
I know daddy loved his son.
