Days When

Story Behind The Song

In some ways, this is the story of too many musicians and non-musicians alike. We are trapped in a culture that rewards almost anything before art and so are required to make our living doing other things, even as music directs and propels our lives. We just hope we don't die at the dead end, at that hopeless place which so many others at the office consider success.

Song Description

This song is a reflection on the choices a person makes in life both personally and professionally and the deep regret that one can feel after having made choices that are successful in a certain way and profoundly unsatisfying in other, more important, ways. It is also a commentary on the cultural forces that validate and promote some choices over others, with poor overall results. It describes the kind of silent sadness that many young adults feel and fail to express when they give up on the their dreams and suppress their passions in favor of the safe economic life.

Lyrics

Clock alarm rings loud on Monday, dragging me hard up and out of bed
Feel much older than I did on Sunday, feeling as low as I ever have

These are days when we feel young as children
We mix life and memory and stir up a fantasy

I gotta briefcase full of problems, I gotta long list of things to do
Don't wanna end up trapped at the office, stuck in a tomb when I'm 42

These are days when we live contradictions
Eyes open wide but still blind, we have it all and we're not satisfied

We've all got our family dramas, we've all got our hidden pain
Living isn't just a bargain at Wal-Mart, and it isn't just what might have been

Can you remember the days when the world was happy in your head?
Whatever happened to days when you weren't so sickened by sadness?

These are days when we live contradictions
Eyes open wide but still blind, we have it all and we're not satisfied
