The song started off as a single character study meant to highlight certain feelings and realizations. However it evolved into the relationship between an unknown soldier and his loved one and how his feelings for her keep him going in the war. The song

A soldier expresses his experiences and feelings for his loved one he left behind. He talks about her memory helping him through a near death experience and tells of his return to keep his promise.
