Story Behind The Song
My husband and I moved to Houston in June of 2008, not knowing a soul. After a few days of unpacking, I ventured out into the music community and heard time and time again from the local songwriters, "If you're new to town, you have to meet Connie Mims!" So I finally tracked this woman down and discovered she's the fairy God-mother of the Houston music scene, one hell of a singer/songwriter and one of the most generous women I've ever known. She and I got to know each other over the year that I was there and eventually sat down and started writing together. This was a song Connie had been trying to write for years but had only been able to start. She told me the inspiration behind the song and played the first bit of it for me and I instantly loved it. We tossed ideas back and forth for a few days and eventually it all fell into place. I play this one live pretty much every time I play out. In my experience, most of the time when you play a slow song people kind of "check out" and go get themselves another drink, but Connie's melodies are so strong and the story so compelling that I often find this gets a bigger applause than the uptempo tunes. And sadly, many people can relate to this kind of heartbreak.

Lyrics
I got over us in April
I'll be gone the first of June
I'll pack my raincoat and my dishes
I'll leave the rest to you
You can have me as your memory
I can't love you anymore
It's a long & lonely drive to Dallas
Four hundred miles, door to door
My sister says she's glad to have me
She didn't have to ask what for
I need some distance between you &me
I can't love you anymore
I loved you good
You loved me bad
I was the only solid ground you ever had
I tried my best
You crossed the line
Go fight your demons on your own time
Call it quitting if you want to
Call it giving up on us
Love made up of smoke and mirrors
Ain't no love I can trust
You can blame it all on me
I can't love you anymore
I loved you good
You loved me bad
I was the only solid ground you ever had
I tried my best
You crossed the line
Go fight your demons on your own time
Maybe when I find a smile again
And spend a little time alone
I won't think about what could have been
It'll turn my heart to stone
And your memory will fade away
I can't love you anymore
Yeah, your memory will fade away
I can't love you anymore
