Lyrics
I was hikin' south of the Downs
There was a chill in the air what with autumn around
When I spotted a campfire not far from the track
A bloke called me over, I put down my pack
He said 'sit by the fire, you look hungry my friend
I've got something good on the brew'
I must admit it smelled great, so he gave me a plate
And dished up Aussie Alphabet Stew
And as the ghost gums looked down little letters jumped out
Of the pot that was over the fire
And as we bothed watch in awe each little letter stepped forward
And sang solo, to the alphabet choir
'A' is for the Anzacs, 'B' is for boomerang, and for Banjo and all of the ballads he wrote
Bunyips and brolgas and the wild Burnie coast
Each letter sang it's song for Australia, about crocodiles, dingoes and dust
Of eagles that soar above the Finke River Gorge and it's gullies the colour of rust
'H' for the high country covered in snow, that melts and fills rivers where the wild ibis go
Then there's jumbucks and jabirus, koalas and of course, kangaroos
And as the full moon looked down the little letters jumped up
On the pot that was over the fire
And we both watched in awe as each letter came forward
To sing solo to the alphabet choir
Lyrebirds, Nullarbor, Olgas, platypus swimming in and out of the boulders
Quokkas and Queensland and Roaring Meg Creek, spoonbills and stonefish and tamarind trees
'U' is for Uluru, then there's Vegemite, wattles and a wombat or two
XXXX that comes in it's bright yellow can, Yandina, Yallingup, Yatala and yams
And when the next little letter stepped forward, and sang 'Zillmere' I said 'wait, there's one more
What about 'M', the old bloke said 'That's true. It stands for the mushrooms I put in the stew'
So if ever one day you're out Darling Downs way and a bloke by a fire says to you
'Take a load off your feet, and have something to eat', try a plate of Aussie Alphabet Stew
