Who I Am

Story Behind The Song

The "jacaranda" reference in this song comes from a stay my girl friend and I made at the Hotel Jacaranda in Avon Park, FL., a very funky, old hotel, now owned by the University of South Florida. Part of it is a dorm for college kids, and part of it a hotel. We didn't see too many other guests, but the dining room seemed to cater to retirees and maybe a nursing home. It made for a memorable stay. The veranda above the main entrance was also a patio for the rooms on the second floor, where we stayed. We quickly began calling the patio the "Jacaranda veranda" and we would sit out there in the evenings, under the big Jacaranda trees, drink wine and eat these green Wasabi peanuts that were at once both gross and addicting. All the other personal references in the verses are true too. I had George Strait or Lyle Lovett in mind as artists who could this song, but the the song is really for my super-wonderful girlfriend, who has put up with my obsessive/compulsive songwriting disorder for nearly three years now.

Lyrics

Who I Am

This old piano
a pedal steel guitar
a long stretch of highway
and my old yellow car
The way you loved me
when no one else gave a damn
It's all part of
who I am

We take in a movie
every Saturday night
Take the back way through town
to avoid all the lights
Those slow Sunday mornings
and your blackberry jam
It's all part of
who I am

I wouldn't trade it for the world
this life I'm living with you girl
I used to get lonely
but it was only
'til the moment
that I met you.

From the Arizona desert
to the Florida Keys
You and me on the veranda
beneath the jacaranda trees
making Guacamole
eating peanuts from the can
It's all part of
who I am

Some men are meant to run the world
My life is here beside you girl
and all that I need
to succeed
is to be
right here with you

From the Arizona desert
to the Florida Keys
You and me on the veranda
beneath the Jacaranda trees
oh I just enjoy the ride
'cause I'm as happy as a clam
You're the best part of
who I am
