Story Behind The Song

After graduating college, I was living in a new city. The first night I was there, I was sleeping on the floor (I didn't have a bed yet) and the neighbors in the next house were arguing so loudly that the police were eventually called. I thought to myself, "What am I getting myself into?" It has helped to remind myself that even though change can feel uncomfortable or painful, it generally leads me to something better.

Lyrics

She's been lying there for hours, eluded by sleep. The covers don't block out the chill and she keeps tossing in restlessness, shutting out thoughts in her brain. The wall's paper thin and the couple next door is fighting again as a car alarm roars out in protest over the moan of the wind and the rain.

A shaft of blue light from the lamp down the hall plays on the diploma that's framed on the wall, reflecting in pieces like plans that lie all around her. And taped cardboard boxes scattered in piles, bulging with memories of triumphs and trials, wait for unpacking and life in this city to stir.

(Chorus)
The world keeps on spinning; doors open and close. Tomorrows become yesterdays. With each new beginning, there's new hope exposed and this time is only a segue.

The last one is gone; the kids are all grown. After thirty-plus years, there's peace in the home. The cupboards are full and the phone bills have had a reprieve. But cooking for two just don't feel the same. There's more time to fill and things are too tame. And it's right and it's good, but it's harder than she'd have believed.

(Chorus)

Life carries on-pain's there then gone

The hospital white is sterile and cold, but there's a warmth in the rough hand that she holds and peace in his eyes as he silently sees what's in store. And as the strength passes away from his touch, distance between heaven and earth seems too much. But angels embrace him until they're together once more.

(Chorus)
