Story Behind The Song
In 2008 my brother and I drove from Calgary, AB to Tulsa, OK to see Tom Waits. After the show I met a guy and we, well, hit it off. A year later I was touring and going through Tulsa and had arranged to meet up with him again. I was leaving to drive to Tulsa after a gig in Denton (just north of Dallas) and couldn't get there fast enough in my anticipation to see him. I tried to tell myself to just enjoy the journey, but in that moment I just wanted to get there immediately and the drive was only a "Means to an End". I started the idea for this song at that moment and finished it in several motel rooms in Kansas and Wyoming after I left Tulsa.

Lyrics
How long, how long is too long?
To have you in my heart, but not have you near
I could drive all night or drive myself crazy
When in just a few hours I could be on your doorstep
And they say it's the journey, not the destination
But I've been holding my breath until, until I see you again
So tonight this highway is only, only a means to an end
How far, how far is too far?
When this distance between us, is just an illusion
When I can feel you beside me, Like you're standing right here
And I test for an echo, And you come through loud and clear
And I know it's the journey, and not the destination
But tonight this highway is only a means to and end
I know they say it's the journey, and not the destination
But I've been holding my breath until I, until I see you again
And I'm sure that this highway holds the secrets of this nation
But tonight this highway is only, only a means to an end
