Story Behind The Song

Too much travelling left me wondering about how all people in an airport on a given day are running the gamut of emotions about not being home and leaving your life at home behind. Tom Waits wanted to contribute to the record so we gave him the role of airport loudspeaker man and he came up with the announcements himself. The sax was recorded to sound like some sad sap in the airport playing for spare change.

Lyrics

HUB

There is a hub where people meet
some move on and others greet
There is a place where you can eat
and I sit there

I have to go away
I have to be somewhere today
Sometimes I?d rather stay
Life seems unfair

In time I will forget
that at one time I was upset
about things that aren?t finished yet
that I?m leaving here

But at this Hub I look and see
10,000 people just like me
leaving someone with whom they?d rather be
and I shed a tear
