Story Behind The Song
Inspired by a newspaper photo I saw many years ago showing a Groom pushing a wheel chair with his Bride in it, who is missing both legs and an arm. Her injuries were the result of a terrorist bombing.

Lyrics
Verse 1:
Sue and Ed are going to be wed,
That's how the newspaper read.
A soldier boy and a southern beauty,
He's going back for
active duty.
She's unhappy, but he says "Don't worry Sue.
I'll be home to marry you in June,
I promise you.
Verse 2:
Family and friends on
a mezzanine,
Sue is showing off her diamond ring.
The date is set for a
country wedding,
She has a dress already.
Ed has a message he wants everyone to hear.
He takes his bride-to-be and holds her near.
Chorus 1:
I promise you a future,
This is a lifetime guarantee.
I promise you a tomorrow,
We have a date with destiny.
Loving you is what I live for,
And when this war is through
I'll be home to say 'I do',
I promise you.
(instrumental)
Bridge:
He was wounded in battle
And lost the use
of his legs.
They gave him a medal,
But Ed would never walk again.
Verse 3:
His heart is pounding as the airplane lands,
Thinking about a change of plans.
There's a crowd to welcome home the G.I.'s,
He looks up from his
wheelchair in surprise.
Sue is there with the cheering folks from town
Wearing a white wedding gown.
Chorus 2:
(And she says)
I promise you a future,
This is a lifetime guarantee.
I promise you a tomorrow,
We have a date with destiny.
Loving you is what I live for,
And love will see us through.
I'm here to say 'I do',
I promise you.
