Story Behind The Song
A traditional French Carol. Jeanetter and Isabella are thought to be milkmaids and the story is that they happened upon the manger, saw the baby Jesus and went to tell the other villagers. To this day in france, young girls dress as milkmaids on Christmas Eve. This was my Dad's favorite carol.
Song Description
This beloved French carol (in English) carol tells the story of two milkmaids, Jeanette and Isabella, who happen upon the manger and are struck by the beauty of the scene. They pause in wonder and then hurry off to tell the villagers to come and see the Christ Child. Lilting baritone vocals and weaving orchestral instruments paint a picture of beauty and wonder.

Lyrics
Bring a Torch, Jeanette, Isabella (traditional/A. Charpentier)
Bring a Torch, Jeanette, Isabella
Bring a torch,
come, hurry and run
It is Jesus, good folk of the village
Christ is born
and mary's calling
"Ah, Ah"
Beautiful is the mother
"Ah, Ah"
Beautiful is her child
It is wrong when the baby is sleeping
It is wrong to speak so loud
Silence then as you gather around Him,
lest you awaken baby Jesus
hush, hush
see how he sweetly slumbers
hush, hush
see how he sweetly sleeps
Interlude
Hush, hush
see how the child is sleeping
hush, hush,
see how he smiles in dreams
Hasten now, good folk of the village
Hasten now, the Christ child to see
You will find him asleep in a manger
Quietly come
and see the savior
Ah, ah
Peacefully now he slumbers
Hush, hush
peacefully now, he sleeps
and ah, ah
beautiful is the mother,
ah, ah,
beautiful is her child
