We Three Kings

Story Behind The Song

I got tired of listening to guitarists try and play Christmas carols to piano arrangements written for hymnals. This contemporary sounding arrangement is designed for use by worship bands. The traditional melody is sung to an easy guitar/band chord progression. Musicians are encouraged to improvise their parts, but sheet music is available if needed. Lyrics

Lyrics by John H. Hopkins, Jr., 1857 (Mt. 2:1-12)

We three kings of Orient are;Bearing gifts we traverse afar,
Field and fountain,
Moor and mountain,
Following yonder star.

Born a King on Bethlehem's plain,
Gold I bring to crown Him again,
King forever, ceasing never,
Over us all to reign.

Refrain:
O star of wonder, star of light,
Star with royal beauty bright,
Westward leading, still proceeding,
Guide us to thy perfect light.

Glorious now behold Him arise;
King and God and Sacrifice:
Alleluia, Alleluia,
Sounds through the earth and skies.

Refrain:
O star of wonder, star of light,
Star with royal beauty bright,
Westward leading, still proceeding,
Guide us to thy perfect light.

Additional Stanzas:

Frankincense to offer have I;
Incense owns a Deity nigh;
Prayer and praising, voices raising,
Worshiping God on high.

Myrrh is mine;
Its bitter perfume breathes
A life of gathering gloom;
Sorrowing, sighing, bleeding, dying,
Sealed in the stone-cold tomb.
