Story Behind The Song
When I wrote the song, I had the image of a widowed or divorced man who hadn't been out much since losing his wife, a "strong silent type" who dislikes bars generally, but on this occasion makes a rare visit out of loneliness.
Song Description
In 3/4 time, this song feels like the slow waltz the singer would like to have with someone s/he is attracted to. Although sung here by a woman, this first-person tale of potential romance is one that has been lived by both men and women the world over. H

Lyrics
lonely as i've been
i'm pleased to make your acquaintance
hope you don't mind if i don't stay too long
'cause i've been here a while, and this frozen-on smile
just reminds me how lonely i've been
i'm tempted to ask you to slow-dance
just for the chance to be held once again
but i see by your face that you're likin' this place
and i don't have the strength to pretend
ch: lonely as i've been, i can't stop believing
it's just a matter of time till i find someone meant to be mine
just 'cause i need some romance
doesn't mean you're my last chance
but there's something i see
makes me wish you were leaving with me
in spite of our sweet conversation
i might have to leave without saying goodbye
cause i've grown so afraid of the price to be paid
for a night full of little white lies
now, don't think i think i know better
i don't presume to say what's right or wrong
but i see by your smile that you might stay awhile
and i don't think i'll be here for long
ch: lonely as i've been...
lonely as i've been
i can't tell you how lonely i've been
but it's just a matter of time till i find someone meant to be mine
just 'cause i need some romance
doesn't mean you're my last chance
but there's something i see
makes me wish you were leaving with me
yeah, there's something i see
makes me wish you were leaving with me
