Southern Cross

Story Behind The Song

The Southern Cross, the navigator's friend and one of the most recognisable constellations of the southern hemisphere, is one of Australia's most evocative symbols; present on both flag and in the night sky. So when Slovakian guitarist Jan Labant asked for a piece of music he could travel with, I decided to send him a postcard of sorts; a musical souvenir of Australia that would capture my feelings for the land. Despite the title, it was actually Jan who detected the symbolism in the piece - four harmonics depict the points of the cross, and a fifth emphasises the bright seven pointed star. Jan is a natural storyteller, so it is no surprise learn how popular this piece became in his frequent concerts at home and abroad.
