Lyrics
A father had a dream about his children and their future. A tree that bore sweet fruit stood beckoning. A rod of iron lined a straight path to the tree, and a building great and spacious hung nearby. People pressed toward the tree, but a mist of temptation veiled the tree and many fell away. Into the sea they tumbled, the building fell and crumbled, and the father tried to help his children through.
(Chorus)
He said, "Take that rod and hold it tight. Keep hanging on; grasp it with all your might. When the evil comed and darkness presses in, just hold that rod. Never give in!"
(Verse 2)
The iron rod's the word of God, the narrow path obedience. The fruit we seek is everlasting life. The people in the building, laughing and mocking, fell into a heap of endless strife. Those who strayed, forever lost, could not be committed to live what they'd been taught and knew was right. But Nephi and the others, except his wicked brothers, obeyed the Lord and came into the light.
(Verse 3)
It's funny, as a child it seemed that life would be so easy. I had all the answers in my head. I knew just how to act, what to say, what to do. I could handle any problem if I tried. Then one day I awoke with questions unanswered. Suddenly, I felt the pangs of doubt. I knelt there in the silence, and as I prayed for guidance, these words of comfort came into my mind.
