Pass You By is a song about a husband who emigrates with his wife to another country where all of her family live, only to discover that they are s group of dysfunctional people who are verbally abusive to both the husband and wife. It has been written from the eyes of the Husband who takes the approach that rather than confront them and cause his wife further pain he will ignore them and stand aside for the love of his wife.

It is a song about showing restraint amidst a barrage of accusations and abuse. The main element of the song is about sacrifice and holding back to protect your loved one from hurt and pain. It is also about how two people standing together in the face of adversity can strengthen their relationship. Hence the lyric, "I don't want to hide but I do it by your side".
