Lyrics
Verse:
?Twas the night before Christmas, he lived all alone,
In a one bedroom house made of plaster and stone,
I came down the chimney with presents to leave,
But saw no tinsel, no presents, not even a tree.
No stockings by mantle, just boots filled with sand,
On the wall were hung pictures of far distant lands,
With medals and badges, awards of all kinds,
A sobering thought found its way to my mind,
This man was a soldier away from his kind.
Alone on Christmas.
Verse:
This house was so different, so dreary and dark,
Not at all like the others: it felt cold and stark,
A soldier lie sleeping, silent, alone.
Curled up on the floor of this one bedroom home
His face was so gentle, his room in disorder,
Not at all how I pictured a brave U.S. soldier,
Could this be the hero of whom I?d once read,
Curled up on a poncho the floor for a bed?
And I wept for this man who was not home but instead,
He was alone on Christmas.
Chorus:
I realized then all the families this night,
Owed their lives to these men who risked all for the fight,
Soon adults would rise and children would play,
Never knowing of the lone soldier half a world away.
All enjoyed freedom each day of the year,
Because of the soldier like the one lying here,
Couldn?t help wonder how many were alone,
On a Christmas eve far from home.
Verse:
The soldier awakened and I heard a rough voice,
He said, ?Santa, don?t cry ?cause this life is my choice,
I fight for freedom, I don?t ask for more,
My life is my God, my country, my corps.?
The soldier rolled over and drifted to sleep,
I couldn?t control it, I stood there and weeped,
I kept watch for hours so silent and still,
Both of us shiv?ring from the cold winters chill,
And I knew he had chosen right with his free will,
To be alone on Christmas.
Verse:
I wanted to stay on that cold winter?s night,
With this guardian of honor so willing to fight,
Then the soldier awakened and with a voice soft and pure,
He said, ?Carry on Santa, all is secure.?
I saw the horizon and knew he was right,
There were children who needed me by morning?s first light,
I?ll never forget as I left from that site,
Before I opened my mouth I?m sure I heard but not quite,
?Merry Christmas, dear Santa, and to all a Good night.?
A lone soldier?s Christmas.
