What Was I Thinkin?

Story Behind The Song

This song is actually merely a hypothetical situation for me. It is only how I imagine it must feel to leave somebody, and then realize they were what you needed all along. I wrote this song almost vicariously through somebody who I know went through this.

Song Description

This is a classic knee-bending song about humility. It's a song everyone wishes their significant other would tell them after losing them to infidelity. It is in our DNA to seek what we want. Once we find what we want, we no longer want it since we HAVE it, and thus, leads us to want something new. However, eventually you cross an interesting line when you realize that you are simply chasing your tail. Only then, do you realize what you NEED. Once we want and what we need are the same, that is when relationships endure. This song is about that epiphany.

Lyrics

Baby put down your pen
I know you're telling on me again
It's like your diary's your best friend
Sayin you're too good for me

And baby I know, I know
This ain't the time to play Romeo
Don't want to let myself let you go
I ain't the best at tragedies

I used to question the direction we were headin so I looked around
It took a lot of empty kisses and a memory to figure it out

I'm not gonna beg
I'm not gonna blame
I'm just gonna say I'm sorry
I'm back in the game
I'm ready to change
I'm not gonna tell you maybe
You don't deserve it, lesson learned is
Never to break your heart again
Tell me what was I thinkin?

Baby I know you're scared
It's hard to love when love was never there
I know that history is never fair
But that's the one thing I can't change

If you're to question the degree of my intention know that this is true
I saw the other side of love and it was nothing cause it wasn't with you

I had an open door, and threw away the key
It's an epiphany long overdue
So if you have to leave, I will get over me
But I will never be over you

I'm not gonna beg, I'm not gonna blame
I'm just gonna say I'm sorry
I'm back in the game, I'm ready to stay
I'm not gonna tell you maybe
You don't deserve it, lesson learned is
Never to break your heart again
Tell me what was I thinkin?
