Story Behind The Song
I composed this song in order for Christmas after being moved by the wonder of the doctrine of Incarnation as I prepared for Christmas Eve services. Like many of my songs this one, too, was composed as a companion to the ministry of Word and Sacrament for the people of my church.
Song Description
This song, seeking to imitate the incarnation, seeks to present the wondrous depth of glory in simplicity, Thus, I chose a simple Americana setting with guitar, fiddle, male, and female voice.
The male and female duo separate at the parts for Mary and Joseph in order to deepen a sense of isolation and heighten the drama of the conclusion.

Lyrics
When Heaven Came Down
© 2011 Michael Milton (Bethesda Words and Music), BMI
When Heaven came down
Angel's sweet sound
Filled the night sky
Over Bethlehem
Shepherds quaking
An infant awaking
to a world that
He once made
Oh the glory
This Wondrous story
Ancient and yet it
Remains forever new
When Heaven came down
God's Promise came true
Mary held the
Child of Heaven
Joseph stood in awe
Of David's Son
Shepherds poor and
Princes noble
Both knelt
Before the manger throne
Oh the glory
This Wondrous story
Ancient and yet it
Remains forever new
When Heaven came down
God's Promise came true
God's promise came true
God's glory came into view;
Jesus came for me--for you
