Fateful Day

Story Behind The Song

This is the story of shattered innocence, of believing in what your authority figures told you when you were young and having your world rocked when your experience tells you that the opposite is true. It's a song of disillusionment and awakening, ending with determination.

Song Description

This Portishead-like song begins with a dissonant children's traditional round and goes into a verse characterized by a jagged melodic line accompanied by music box-like bells. The chorus takes us down to quiet depths with a techno texture and drums. A compressed breakdown for the bridge leads to exotic vocals bringing the lyrics of the round back after a searing electric guitar ebow solo.

Lyrics

FATEFUL DAY

VERSE:
As a child I believed what I was taught about my world
Believed in my priests, in my teachers,
And in my parents - God bless them for all that they didn't know...
And for what I discovered on my own

CHORUS:
There came that fateful day
When all I thought I knew got blown away
Life cut thru me like a blade
And my whole world was changed

VERSE:
It took some time to take it in and to get out into this larger world
Believing in myself, in all that I had learned
Thru experience - God bless me for all I hadn't lived yet...
And for the rest that I still had to get

CHORUS:
There came that fateful day
When all I thought I'd lived got blown away
Life cut thru another layer
And my whole world again was changed
I thought I had life figured out
I thought I saw a clear way to go
I thought I knew beyond a doubt --
So what do I ever really know?

BRIDGE:
Life is change and worms become butterflies
Snakes shed their skin, some ideas have to die
The greatest empire can crumble away 'cause
Nothing that's born on earth can stay the same

So where do I stand?
I stand renewed in every moment, ready for anything -

CHORUS:
There came that fateful day Now every moment I am blown away
I've become the cutting blade And everywhere I go, the world is changed
There came that fateful day Now every moment I am blown away
I've become the cutting blade And everything is changed
