Story Behind The Song
I decided to write a song that was out of my comfort zone. My genre has been hip hop and/or other urban contemporary up until now. But I think my lyrics can stand up in any genre because good writing is good writing and good storytelling is good storytelling.
Song Description
the subject reflects on his cheating ways, realizing that he's been dishonest and unfaithful as a result of his dad's influence. He struggles through the whole song to redeem himself but finds he's facing consequences for his actions even as he himself becomes a father.

Lyrics
My daddy
my daddy was a hard drinkin' man with the gift of gab
the last time I seen him
he was climbing in the back
of a big yellow cab
and he said: son you remember
the ball game the other day?
As fun as it was
it had to end
there's just no other way...
chorus
And it cleaves my heart in two
when I see you cry
and you'd have to think
just like I do
to understand why
and the point here's not
to make anybody blue
but your old man's no good
to anyone but you.
Shelly was trying
to sleep all night
but her thoughts wouldn't
let her rest
I came through the door
she said I got some things
that I need to get off my chest
that's the third time
you've been home late
in as many months
give me one good reason
not to get up and go
for what you shouldn't
have done once!
chorus
So the years went by
it was the same old thing
having whiskey on my breath
bad luck and bad timing
till I finally met the one
who would turn my life around
make me see the way I look
make me hear the way I sound
I'm sitting
on the sofa
my little boy and I
both feel alone
he looks up at me
with tears in his eyes
when is Mommy coming home?
And I said:
hopefully pretty soon
guess she needed a break
It's hard to explain
well let's just say
'daddy made a mistake'
chorus
