Story Behind The Song
The author of the lyrics fell in love with a "brilliant young man with a promising future" a few months before she had to travel over 400 miles away for 4 months, and not a word was exchanged, much to her heartbreak. She hoped that when she came back that things would change, but 3 months later still no word. Finally, she started seeing someone else and she decided that her hope was pointless. Two months later she received a phone call from her lost love, but the phone call was much too late because she had fallen in love with someone else. Thus began an emotional battle with her true feelings, which caused some haunting questions to be asked, questions that found their way to become this song.
Song Description
In the style of Time In A Bottle (Croce) and I Won't Hold You Back (Toto), this haunting tune effortlessly delivers the timeless questions "why" and "what could have been." This song examines the past by remembering a captivating moment in time, being locked in a "spell," regret that there wasn't enough time to express true feelings, and the price paid for unspoken love.

Verse 1:
When I saw your face for the very first time, captive I was as I hoped you'd be mine.
Locked up in a spell time passed so quietly; then came the time wh - en I had to leave.
Bridge:
Wanting to tell you just how I really felt, young and uncertain, got scared, and I left.
Chorus:
If we had what we had, why did it change? If we were what we really were, why did we walk away?
If we had what we really had, why did we let it go? These are things I often ask, but never really know.
Verse 2:
Those unspoken words are a price that I paid; I'm sure that you paid a price for them too.
As long as I live I'll regret losing you; uncertain love, can I ever forget?
Chorous:
If we had what we had, why did it change?
If we were what we really were, why did we walk away?
If we had what we really had, did we let it go?
These are things I often ask and never really know.
