Witching

Story Behind The Song

Inspired by a story by Lord Dunsany, in which the (silly) burghers of an unimportant town seek to increase the profile of the area by bringing magic into their lives. When they succeed they find it impossible to control. Be careful what you wish for!

Lyrics

The smoke rises straight from your chimney
the chimney sits square on the gable
my heart rests under your roof
and my feet are under your table

Ch: You have found your own tradition
as the witching takes you higher
to breath a spell of loss and dreaming
darkness and fire, darkness and fire

Find the small magic that still remains
in english woods and english fields
down among the cabbages where thunderbolts are found
and all of your sadness is healed

Turn around and you'll see me I'm never so far
standing in the shadows as the stars start to fall
Ziroonderel who knows how to hold you
for a time, for a spell

Then one day you'll stand on the edge
the edge of the fields we know
and hear through the mist the sound of a horn
Alveric on his way home
