Forsaken

Story Behind The Song

The lyrics were a gift to the songwriter from her husband, knowing she needed to write a song for an assignment about the crucifixion, he penned the lyrics in a 30-minute span and emailed them to her. The perspective of Jesus' potential self-doubt was spurred by the couples' mutual fascination with the tender song Superman, which explores a hero's self-doubt and dilemma.

Song Description

Despair: our own at times is understood by Jesus' who despaired at the time of his crucifixion, feeling abandonment by his friends, the hatred of the accusing crowd, and even possible self-doubt--"what have I undertaken?". Certainly he felt abandoned by God--hence the question: "Why am I God forsaken?

1. The ground rises up and it opens for me,
The light rushes 'round in the sky,
How will I find my way home in the dark?
How will I be by your side?

All I can hear is the noise of their jeering,
All I can see is their hatred,
All I can feel is the burden of this cross,
What have I undertaken? ?

2. Is the terror of bitter days mine alone to drink?
I'm lost to myself and my friends,
Alone amidst my people,
Thinking this is how it ends.

I cannot find your face in the crowd,
I cannot feel your love at all,
Can you not hear when I cry out loud?
Why am I God forsaken?

Bridge. Is my path so crooked?
Have I strayed too often?
Why are you so far away?
Help me, hold me, lift me up,
Catch me as I'm falling,
My God, My God,
Why have you forsaken me?

Refrain. All I can hear is the noise of their jeering,
All I can see is their hatred,
All I can feel is the burden of this cross,
What have I undertaken?
I cannot find your face in the crowd, ?
I cannot feel your love at all,
Can you not hear when I cry out loud?
Why am I God forsaken?
