Story Behind The Song
This song is about a walk I used to have to take every day after work as a house painter when I lived in Charlottesville, Virginia. It is about a railroad track I had to cross to get down onto the kudzu-choked trail that led to my crappy little townhouse hole.
Song Description
This is one of the more percussive songs on the record and has an unusual bowed part on the upright bass in the chorus, with some strange backing vocals.

Lyrics
So afternoon is gone and soon
It will be dark but light is gone
Except for light which is behind you
The railroad cars they carry coal
From some dark hole but they don't move
They are so black and there are many
Light is gone, you must descend
There is no light so you hold on
To a big stick that you carry
Oh the path is green but you have seen
That it is growing
Some African beat
Comes from the bush, it is your feet
You try to push, but you have fallen
I see a tree
It's just like me, well he starts to choke
He can't fall, he is dead now
Oh
So afternoon is gone and soon
It will be dark but light is gone
Except for light which is behind you
The railroad cars they carry coal
From some dark hole but they don't move
They are so black and there are many
The light is gone you must descend
It's afternoon and you hold on
To a big stick that you carry
Oh the path is green but you have seen
That it is growing
