Story Behind The Song
I taught my son to play guitar at an early age. When he was 12 years old he came to me saying he had written a song. I was encouraging, but I wasn't expecting much, then he played the first riff and launched into the first two vs. and I couldn't believe he had written it. It wasn't the sing/song kind of phrasing that songwriters can get into at the early stages. I tried to get him to finish it, write a chorus etc., but he wouldn't. That was typical, because I couldn't get him to finish homework or finish cleaning his room etc. Finally I asked him if I could write some more verses and a Chorus. He was fine with it, so I did.
Song Description
Protaganist is a teenager from a dysfunctional home. He's feeling he's at a end, so he hits the road, in order to hold on to his sanity. He dreams of something bigger than his tiny existence and yet he's grateful for what he does have. He is wise beyond his years. The verses rock and are kinda heavy, but the melody on the chorus lifts the mood to a more hopeful place.

Lyrics
HOLD ON TO WHAT I HAVE by Scott Aycock and Jesse Aycock
Copyright 1999
Turn on the stove.
Heat up a pan.
Dad's lying on the couch stone drunk again,
Thinking he's a man.
Lie in my room.
Listen to my music.
Some kids try to convince me to use it
Like some fools do.
CHORUS
Too much to think about.
Too little to leave behind.
Still I hold on to what I have
To give me peace of mind.
Sit at the wheel
Turn on the key
I keep wondering what'll become of me
Eventually.
Out on the road
Wind at my face
All I want to do is to leave this place
And not look back.
CHORUS
Shove in a tape
Turn up the sound
Blow through every small ass town around
Like a horse through the gate.
Driving down the road
Listening to The
I'm grateful I still have a head
While life goes on and on.
CHORUS
