Lyrics

One Last Ride
© 2015 Starburst

I used to play with tops and yoyos
Hide and seek with all my friends
Building forts from pillows
From day start 'til the end
Mama called us home for supper
Papa's home from work
Reliving these good memories
Just seems to make it hurt

Life was so much simpler
Everybody knew
All our neighbors on the block
And down the avenue
But now there's only coldness
All throughout the hood
It seems the use of fear
Has destroyed all that's good

(chorus)
Have we lost all promise?
Have we lost all hope?
Is it violence that clamors
As the only way to cope?
Is self-destruction coming
A nation's suicide?
Or are we just all begging
For that one last ride?

My first grade teacher
Used to make me kneel and pray
Sister Mary Ellen
Said that God would show the way
To stay grounded
Fully in the light
But now I'm lost and searching
For how to make things right

(chorus)
Have we lost all promise?
Have we lost all hope?
Is it violence that clamors
As the only way to cope?
Is self-destruction coming
A nation's suicide?
Or are we just all begging
For that one last ride?

(Bridge)
What would we have thought?
Way back in the day
Nobody predicted
We wojuld lose the will to play
Never saw it coming
History repeats
The earth's best promise
Kneeling in defeat

(chorus)
Have we lost all promise?
Have we lost all hope?
Is it violence that clamors
As the only way to cope?
Is self-destruction coming
A nation's suicide?
Or are we just all begging
For that one last ride?
Or are we just all begging
For one last ride?

This my kind of folk song. Great intro, sweet guitar and vocals. Excellent background female harmonizing. Rich storytelling lyrics I could so relate to from my free-range childhood days...even the Catholic School story. YES! There is absolutely NO WAY to improve these well-crafted lyrics and the melody is perfect with them. If you were playing at a festival, I would definitely come to hear your set.

The acoustic guitar is nicely done and lays well in the mix. The song has some commercial potential, perhaps as source music in a movie or TV production. The electric guitar solo is very effective and not derivative of any particular performer. The mood of the song is dark. The lyrics offer a stern warning to listeners, particularly Americans. I'd like to hear more of this lyrical honesty utilized by other artists.
