Story Behind The Song
We had two friends who were single, expectant mothers nearing term as Christmas approached. The one was part of a large family for whom this pregnancy was a sign of shame, none of whom asked her about the baby. The family of the other made room in their hearts for the child and created a loving space for him.
Song Description
The words "and Mary kept these things and pondered them in her heart" have always been in my memory. This song imagines what she pondered as an expectant and then new mother.

Lyrics
Ponder these things, Mary, Ponder
Ponder these mysteries, ponder
1. The message-bearing stranger that upsets you so, the fluttering awakening in your soul, your soul....
2. A child with no father taking shape in your womb, Loved ones who stand with you, their hearts making room...
3. Your man builds things that he can see, yet believes in a dream, His calloused hands, smooth by his humble call....
Bridge: Hail Mary, you believe it
Hail Mary, may we receive it
4. No birthing room, no cozy place to stay and a bed for your baby, from sweet-smelling hay....
5. This tiny face, nestled at your breast, eyes now closed, as he takes a breath.....
