Simunye

Story Behind The Song

My wife and I visited Africa a few years ago, and stayed in a Zulu village. It was one of the most serene, peaceful experiences I've had. I tried to capture the essence of the Zulu villagers' lives in this song.

Lyrics

Verse 1:
I climb this path on this mountain, it twists and turns
I feel right at home as the sugar cane burns
It?s the middle of nowhere but the horse knows the way
I?m at my roots when the people say

Chorus:
Simunye
Simunye

Verse 2:
We are one with this land, it gives us life
A plentiful world for a man and wife
We fish this river and plow this land
And build our shelter with our own bare hands

Chorus:
Simunye
Simunye

Verse 3:
We cleanse our bodies where the white waters roll
And dance with the spirits to save our souls
We guard this lifestyle that?s been handed down
And wear our pride like a golden crown

Chorus:
Simunye
Simunye
