Lyrics
I'll Be Coming Home Soon T. Edwin Doss She walked the dirt road to the mailbox everyday gold cross around her neck, a baby on the way hoping to find a letter, now and again He would send her Army pay for a wedding band A young soldier fighting in a foreign land Smiles, mixed with tears, there was a letter waiting she tore it open, trembling, so much time anticipating familiar handwriting, he sent a note with thoughtful words to give her hope she read, aloud, what that young soldier wrote :
Chorus: "My only love, I miss you so I'll be leaving here soon, I wanted you to know that I love you.... with all my heart soon we will be together, never apart make plans for a wedding in June Say a prayer for me.....i'll be coming home soon " three weeks time, no other mail came in early june, the telephone rang with news she thought she'd never hear she screamed, "father help me....i know you are near!! " Fell to her knees praying in tears Cargo transport touched down in the rain she was dressed in black with her gold cross and chain a flag draped coffin appeared through the door a lone bugler played "taps" in a thunder roar she read, aloud, his last letter once more:
