Story Behind The Song
I'd just moved from an apartment to a house a few years ago and I intentionally wanted to capture the bittersweet feeling of leaving a place behind where you spent years. In the meantime, I had a riff without words rattling around forever and slapped "hey hey hey, it's moving day" on it and worked backwards. It all came together quickly and didn't think much of it until I brought it to band rehearsal and with a rhythm section the whole thing took off.
Song Description
Musically, it's really a Memphis style groove ... even at 73 BPM it gets your toes tapping and people dancing.
The lyrics are all about the unique feelings on the day you're actually moving out of your old house or apartment, seeing a place where you used to live all cleaned out and reduced to just a few last boxes left when it's time to move.
The "hey hey hey" chorus & lively feel makes it pretty usable in any situation.

Lyrics
It's not a bell, what the hell
There's a truck backing up in my bed
It's only 5:00, I'm barely alive
For a second there thought I was dead
I've slept enough & I gotta get up
And clean up this debris
Just one more load I'll hit the road
Got a long day ahead of me
It's moving day
There's an echo in here, off the chandelier
The walls are all empty
I'll leave the lamp and a busted amp
And a little bitty piece of me
It's a little surreal; don't know how I feel
About leaving all this behind
At any rate, it's much too late
I've already made up my mind
It's moving day
I've killed the lawn; the screen door is gone
And I busted the telephone jack
I'm tired enough, packing all my stuff
I won't get my deposit back
Time to make my flight, I flip off the light
Guess I should shut the door
No need to lock it, or the key in my pocket
I won't ever be here no more
