Story Behind The Song
I wrote this song for my husband, who has been deployed several times in wartime situations overseas. There are so many who will never be the same again due to things they have witnessed and due to being exposed to traumatic events on a regular basis. This song could apply to any first responders (police, firefighters, red cross volunteers, medical personnel who perform triage during crisis situations like hurricanes and floods). So many people are wounded on the inside, and are carrying around deep internal scars from serious trauma, especially since 911, along with the many natural disasters that have occured during the last decade. This song is in honor of those people, and I would hope that it would be theraputic and healing to the unsung heroes that walk among us, who make the world a better place.
Song Description
This is a song about post traumatic stress. It is about a military vet, but could be about anyone who is a first-responder, who experiences tragedy, violence and death on a regular basis, who sacrifices their lives for others. There are so many who devote their lives to helping others, even if it means sacrificing their own life or peace of mind. This song is in honor of people who live day-in and day-out with memories of traumatic things they have witnessed.

Lyrics
The Longest Scars
by Veonne Howell
1. I'm a wounded soldier
down on my knees
My heart is heavy laden;
please pray for me...
(Chorus)
'Cause the longest scars
that run so deep,
They are the ones
that no one sees.
No one sees...
2. I'm weary from the struggle, the struggle to be free.
I cannot see too clearly;
please pray for me.
My heart's been split wide open by things that I have seen,
Things that just won't leave me, they won't let me be.
(Repeat Chorus)
3. I just got a letter, but I could hardly read...
Blurry words through tears that fall endlessly.
My wife and kids are well,
or so it seems.
But I can tell they hide how scared they are for me.
(Repeat Chorus and End)
