Shao Ying's Bio

Shao Ying LOW obtained her LTCL, FTCL and LRSM in piano performing before furthering her studies at the Ecole Normale de Musique de Paris - Alfred CORTOT, where she studied piano under the late Mme. Annie d'ARCO and the late M. Julien RIDORET, and chamber music under Mme. Chantal DEBUCHY. She has won prizes at competitions including 1st prize at the Competition Claude KAHN for piano duet with her sister, Shao Suan, 2nd prize at the Saint-Nom-la-Bretèche Competition, and 2nd prize at the International Competition of U.F.A.M. in Paris. Shao Ying and her sister have also performed at prestigious concert halls such as the Salle Gaveau and the Salle Cortot in Paris, and they have also given a week-long piano duet recital at the Hotel Méridien-Montparnasse in Paris for students chosen from their school as well as from the Paris Conservatory. Participation in masterclasses enabled her to study under well-known pianists such as Ms. Nelly BEN-OR in London, and Mr. Olivier GARDON in Paris.

Besides the piano, Shao Ying also studied the harpsichord under well-known harpsichordist, Mr. Ilton WJUNISKI. In 1997, she and her sister were invited to take part in a two-week full scholarship music camp in southern France for harpsichord students who were highly recommended by well-known musicians of the international level. They also received another invitation to perform J.S.BACH's Concerto for 2 Harpsichords in C minor, BWV 1060, with the European Baroque Chamber Ensemble in Porto, Portugal for its Baroque Music Festival that same year.

Since her return, together with her sister, they have performed with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra and the Temasek Junior College Orchestra, In 1999, they were invited to perform at the Istana by the late ex-President Ong Teng Cheong. In 2002, they gave a Singapore premiere of BRUCH's Concerto for 2 Pianos and Orchestra in A Flat minor, Op.88a and they also performed at the Esplanade Recital Studio for Esplanade's Open House. In 2004, they gave a successful Two-Piano Recital at the Esplanade Recital Studio as part of it's Chamber Music Series. In December 2006, they performed at the "Asia Grand Piano Concert" in Seoul, Korea where their composition, Rondo for 3 Pianos 12 Hands, was being showcased.

As an active piano accompanist, Shao Ying has accompanied various musicians and singers, and has performed in France, Denmark, Italy, Portugal, China and Inner Mongolia. In 2002, both she and her sister were appointed as piano accompanists by the National Arts Council for the 2002 National Chinese Music Competition for Erhu Open category. She has also participated in the Tunbridge Wells International Young Concert Artist Competition 2000 in England, the 5th National Competition for Young Cellists 2004 in Guangzhou, China, as well as the 6th Adam International Cello Festival and Competition 2006 in Christchurch, New Zealand. Shao Ying is currently a member of the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music accompanying staff.

Shao Ying also composes in her free time. Some of her works, such as Serenade No.3 (runner-up at the 2005 UK Songwriting Competition, Instrumental Category), Scherzino and Variations on a theme of "Happy Birthday" for violin and piano, Souvenirs de Paris (finalist at 2005 UKSC) and Valse de Printemps (finalist at 2005 UKSC) for 2 pianos have been performed in recitals. In 1998, together with her sister, their commissioned works, Rondo for 3 pianos 12 hands and Danses Joyeuses for orchestra were written for the 4th President's Charity Concert for Young Talents and the National University of Singapore Symphony Orchestra's annual concert respectively. Shao Ying recently won the April '07 Broadjam Soundtrack Contest for her instrumental composition, In My Dreams. As an avid songwriter, Shao Ying has also written songs for singers such as Jolin TSAI, Suzanne HSIAO and CHEN Yi Yi. She is also a member of Composers And Authors Society of Singapore (COMPASS).
