Singer-songwriter Phil Maybury now has four successive years of achievement in the UK Songwriting Contest. In 2012, despite being ill for most of the year, nine entries achieved two semi-finalists and seven commendations. In 2011, 24 entries achieved eight semi-finalists and 16 commendations across all categories including the new Singer Songwriter category which assesses vocals as well as songwriting.

In 2010 he achieved four semi-finalists and nine commendations and in 2009 his first three entries made him a triple semi-finalist. He also received an Honourable Mention in the World's Best Songs Competition in November 2009. Two of his songs also reached the Broadjam folk and blues top ten.

After a year's illness, he now intends to renew his songwriting and submit to international songwriting competitions in what he hopes will be a year of even greater success.

Introducing Phil Maybury

Singer-songwriter Phil Maybury has won many awards over the past four years in the UK Songwriting Contest and elsewhere (see Intro and News items).

Phil's musical style originated in folk and country, later moving into folk-rock and pop, and more recently into soul and blues.

He lists his biggest songwriting influences as being:
Earlier phase: Lennon and McCartney, Simon and Garfunkel, Ralph McTell, Leonard Cohen, Joni Mitchell, Carole King, Eva Cassidy, Chris de Burgh and Gerry Rafferty.
Later phase: Mark Knopfler, Sting, Sarah McLachlan, Boo Hewerdine, Gretchen Peters, Dougie Maclean and Alison Krauss.


Other strong musical influences include Melanie Safka, the Carpenters, Neil Diamond, the Moody Blues, Dire Straits, the Corrs, Runrig and the folk and country scene in general.

Phil has always had a keen interest in contemporary music. He began playing the guitar as a teenager at the folk club at school, then in the late seventies formed the acoustic group Manuscript, which performed at various local venues and had a complete programme devoted to them on BBC local radio. Along with one other member of the group, he secured a BBC contract to record songs for children's radio.

He has always been a writer, and alongside his music he has worked as an advertising copywriter, a journalist and a web-designer, as well as editing a national magazine.
