Hi Loren! Where can I get a copy of Floating Art? Could you post the "Buy" button on it so I can get it?

Cheers,

Jamie, I appreciate the review of Wine Glasses. Yes it was improvised and you've given me a new artist to get to know in Keith Jarrett. I've been listening through Rio, which is astounding! Most of my solo piano influence lately has been neo classical: Nils Frahm, Goldmund, some post rock and Jo Blankenburg's Feather Dance. My aim was to free myself compositionally to express the music in a raw emotional way that translated beyond the expression. Thanks again and best to you!

Thank you for your kind review and encouraging comments regarding Tea In Our Starbucks Cups. I'm curious about the relatively low score you gave it in light of the positive comments you gave. Is there any additional feedback you can provide?

Best regards to you!

Thank you so much for the kind review of Floating Art! Always an encouragement to hear from you!

I'm curious what your influences are if you have time to share. Lately, I have been listening to Nils Frahm, Goldmund, Balmorrhea, Jo Blankenburg's Feather Dance, and others, all neoclassical and post-rock composers. And, there's an improvised piece by Leszek Mozdzer on the Finding Neverland soundtrack that was defining for me. But I hear more classical influence in your piano work.

Jeff, thank you for your review of Tea In Our Starbucks Cups. This piece is from a series of improvised sessions in which I was experimenting with spontaneous composition, thus the error being left in there. I have debated the idea of recording with MIDI so I can make minor adjustments and still preserve the aim of the raw emotion and preserve the performance. It bothers me artistically, but it may be the best of both worlds.

I really enjoyed Dunno Project, ACT 9. Best regards to you and your music!

No problem! If it was improvised, then there was no error:) Keep leaving them in and you might find that you start liking certain mistakes. I'm not a big fan of midi sound either, but that's almost all I have out here(broadjam). It was a project of sorts and a way of finding something in myself. However, I must get back to my own instrument after some time away... live again.
All the best,
jeff

Thank you for your encouraging review of Tea In Our Starbucks Cups. You were correct about my aim being spontaneous composition and the wrong note. I have debated recording MIDI so I can make minor corrections and still preserve the stream of musical expression and performance. Trying to balance art and excellence.

I really enjoyed Reclamation Day. Best regards to you!

Thank you, it is risky as I'm a perfectionist. I was inspired by the liner notes on the Finding Neverland soundtrack. There are two stunningly emotional piano tracks on that CD that were improvised by a Polish pianist playing off an orchestral score.

Ha well, that's a digital piano tweaked in post-production. It has great action, very sensitive expression and 4-strike sampling that really delivers a rich, organic sound. My two favorite pianos are an aged Steinway that resided in the performance hall where I took piano in college, and a Young Chang that a friend of mine owns. I find that I can connect with this Yamaha at a performance level almost as well as with those instruments. And much easier to record!

Great job, I thought for sure this was a acoustic piano, guess I'd need some more ear training to tell the difference. I'd love to be able to tweak my Roland FP10 keyboard to sound that good.

Hi David, a quote from the Help pages: "A song reaches the Top 10 charts based on its recent activity on Broadjam. There are a number of factors that determine a song's ranking, including song plays, downloads, reviews, star ratings and other activity as well, all of which is calculated daily. In order to keep this system as fair and objective as possible, we cannot reveal, specifically, how the algorithm is calculated."

I have had a few songs on top ten lists and one helpful thing to do is review as many songs as you can. This will add your songs to the review queue and raise their visibility on the site for others to listen to, rate, and review. Hope that helps!

Thank you for you kind review of Wine Glasses. Your description of being transported by the piece is one of the greatest compliments you could have paid me! Several reviewers have suggested vocals over my piano pieces, which has never occurred to me. But, I've been starting to think about ways to incorporate them. I love how Howard Shore used vocalists in his Lord Of The Rings scores. A direction like that has been forming in my mind.

I enjoyed Marionette. All the best to you with your music!

You're welcome, I look for the positives in every song I review here and there were plenty of positives in your piece. I'm having another cheeky listen to it now :) I think adding vocals with take your music to a whole new level and if this is something you choose to do in the future then I will certainly be wanting to hear more of your tracks. Thanks for your comments about my track too, It a bit different to my usual music (I play piano also) so I'm in an experimenting phase. keep up the great work! :)

Many thanks for your review of "Concerto 15". I found your feed back helpful as I have not ever submitted this piece to anything in the vein that you commented on. It is a whimsical piece and now I think I may submit it to some comedy or cartoon licensing opportunities.

kind regards,

So, I really enjoyed the 5:00 classical - contemporary and titleless piece of yours I just reviewed and came here to check out some of your other work to find they are all titleless. So, you have me curious now! Why no titles?

I listened to the other classical piece and enjoyed it as well. My recent music is piano as well and your love for dissonance and tension is really stimulating. Thanks for challenging my harmonic sensibilities!

Thank you so much Loren for nice comments and your attention ... of course for constructive comments , too .
That was like computer because my computer played it , I am not a Piano performer ...and the piece is just something to show the listeners the notes , not even working on dynamix in MIDI file !

About the question here , I don't like to title my music because when you start to listen in this way you have no preconception and just go for the music and listen to it "More Musically" than related to the literature or any visual depiction by me , and you can find your complete interpretations separated from the composer's view ...

Thanx again , I will come to listen to your worx soon .
Why you name your pieces ?

So, your question about titles spun me off into a new thought process! I have come to music through pop channels, writing for and playing in bands for which songs were as much a product as they were an artistic expression in the purer sense. The title is a way to reach out and grab the listener in a way that engages them in the song in a memorable way. But, you are familiar with this way of thinking, I am sure. Solo piano is a recent direction for me, and I've never even considered not titling my work and how not doing so might affect the listener.

So to answer the question, I title my pieces because the way I compose is to start with an image or emotion and begin to play. The title is a summary of that seed of inspiration that moves the music. I have come to view music (for me) as a voice inside that speaks a language unique to me. Composition for me has become en exercise in connecting with and releasing that voice as honestly as possible. When I do so, the result is something very personal and emotional for me. The title is the starting point, and the music is what I have to say about that image or emotion. So for me, the title is integral.

I suppose I could remove it and just let the music itself speak to the listener in whatever meaning it has for them. But, I enjoy understanding what music means to a composer. The story behind it often increases my connection with the piece and the artist. So again, a personal preference.

Thanks for the question and helping me uncover my own assumptions and crystallize my own viewpoint. I'd be interested in your impression of my music. Wine Glasses would be a good starting point. It seems to resonate with others the most.

All the best!
Loren

Wine Glasses , nice , moving piece ...wise on gliding into the main motif's variation potentials .
Birthday Wish , the title describes it , light and warm ...as a look on the shines of future ,
Tea In Star Bucks and Floating Art were also cool .
...good recordings , too .

I feel these worx are like confessions , so pure to expressing feelings . They are very close to eachother . You have a Romantic taste and it seems you are a warmhearted person . Good luck !

One another thing I liked was the idea of mistakes that you left them to be there as a part of human's life and performance . You know ? I'm acquainted with the idea , the listener feels more intimate to the performer ...of course the Juries , festivals , voting systems don't like it but it could be there as a metaphor of mistakable movement of life .
Of course as I can remember in 20th century there were composers who tried to write some pieces which were similar to mistaken performances but the idea was different from that you did .

As you want to give a kind of mixture of literature-point-of-start and a musical-description of it , I can say it's a good thing , you could mix them together well , well-suited to eachother . Yes you were right , I am completely familiar with the ideas of naming , it is about four years that I am thinking and searching about it via composers ...I also have sometimes starting points in words or images or memories but I hide them in my own privacy , not to give preconceptions , opposite of your viewpoint of "what music means to a composer" .

Another thing about your comment is that I don't want to say : "let the music itself speak to the listener in whatever meaning it has for them" as you thaught I'm saying . I'm not saying anything about speaking , I just regard the unconscious feedback of a listener to a work , however the outcome is the same , my view is that one , not the idea of speaking ...

all the best ;
Pasha
