Hi John, thanks for the time you took writing the review of my song best friend. You are right in your critique I have never studied music let alone song structure. Do you have any good literature references you can suggest on composition theory and or song structure? I am just having a listen to some of your tunes now. Nice mellow tunes and clear engineering. All the best Pewana
6 Steps to Songwriting Success by Jason Blume is really helpful. I highly recommend reading his chapter on identifying song structures and then listening to your favorite Billboard top 100 list artists. You can go to grooveshark.com to listen to almost any song you want. I analyzed over a hundred songs probably. Good exercise. Good luck!
Hi John, thanks for the review of my track "promise (instrumental)". I've seen you have won the song of the year contest. I've been finalist on it too with my song "Icy eyes". Best regards. Osea
Hi John, Thanks for the kind review of my song, "The Offing" from my 1972 album, "Time Loop". It has been acknowledged as an album that helped to define the Folk Acid Rock genre. I recorded the album on 16-track 2" tape at Wally Heider's Studio in SF....which was the mecca of all the top artists at the time. "Time Loop" was the very first album in the US to use the Dolby Sound Reduction system. It was a real cutting edge record where we purposely did not use any drums on...because we wanted the freedom to create and move rhythms based on the acoustic guitar as the guide for the rhythms. Check out the album at my Broadjam site....pop on some earphones to hear the whole process....which was the way we listened to records on the 70's. Best of luck with your music. When I get a chance, I will stop by and enjoy your music. Please stay in touch! Best, Chet Nichols Inductee - The Kansas Music Hall Of Fame
Awesome stuff, John. Your style is great! Such an easy going sound, very endearing stuff. Keep it up! Love in between in particular is amazing.
Thanks for the support Paul. Not sure if you saw my post because she reviewed one of your songs too? I've been a member for a while and it was one of my worst reviews. It was frustrating because she actually reviewed "Love in Between" and for her title she wrote the first line of my song which is "I never say what I mean". It never gets repeated so its just ridiculous. Her positive comment to me was "indie folk song". I didn't know identifying a genre was considered a positive comment. Her constructive comment was "a little boring, simple arrangement". She pretty much gave me all 3's. Obviously, she just wanted review credits which is pretty selfish. I've had some effort-lacking reviews before and usually don't say anything, but I guess I got tired of it. I checked out a few of your songs. Great voice and guitar playing! Super clean recording that you got! Best of luck!
Yep! I got just about the same thing. Her positive comment on mine was, "tv show music." Her title for my song was "see her," which is (like yours), never repeated, and in the first line "All to Blame." Constructive comments were, "boring, no replay value." I agree that it's clear she's just reviewing for credits, but if you want your stuff to be reviewed, then you need to put effort into the reviews that YOU do! It's frustrating, and very self-centered. Thanks for the kind words on my tunes! I played my fiancé your stuff last night, and she loved it as well.
I don't appreciate the lack of effort you put into reviewing my song. Its fine if you don't like a song, but if you're going to be a part of this community you should explain why. If you have a degree in songwriting from Berklee as you say, you should be able to explain why a song doesn't work or why it is boring. I can tell you did not even take the time to really listen to my song since you completely missed the title. Any decent songwriter would know what the title of a song is if they have any analyzation skills. Please do not waste this community's time and insult my song without giving the courtesy to at least listen.
I second this. If you're going to offer constructive comments, then you need to do better than "not very original," or "no repay value." That is in no way constructive. I would expect more from an accomplised songwriter.
Hey John, Thanks a million for the outstanding review of my track "Catch The Dance". Your helpful advice is well taken and appreciated. I know what the missing link is that you're talking about in the advice section to take it to the next level...Mastering!
Thanks for the positive review! Appreciate it.
Hi JR! Thank you for your positive and helpful comments! I'm a sort of total beginner in recording music so your comments are very much appreciated!
