Mark Maxwell Bio
Mark Maxwell is one of the best-selling saxophonists in the world. And although his name is not a household word, his self-promoted 17 solo releases have sold more than 450,000 copies, without the support of a record label or significant radio airplay.
======================================================
Mark Maxwell has saxophone in his blood. His mother, Donna, played as a child, as did his older sister, and his younger brother, Phil, is a professional saxophonist.
There was always music in the home -- piano, organ, guitars, drums, etc. -- and it was this exposure to a variety of instruments that led Mark to explore what has become a multi-instrumental talent. His first instrument, in fact, was the guitar, and his first paying gig was on the guitar. But sax was in his blood, and after his introduction to the instrument in the 5th grade band, saxophone became his primary focus.
Mark grew up in Indiana, where high school jazz is a fervent, competative passion. He played lead alto in the award winning big band, The Wildsiders, at North Side High School in Fort Wayne under the direction of the Indiana legend, Barry Ashton, and was an award-winning soloist in jazz festival competition. After high school Mark joined the Army, attending the Naval School Of Music in Norfolk, VA, and toured Europe for several years with the 8th Infantry Division Army Band.
After the Army, the music business called Mark to the west coast, and since moving to L.A. he has established himself as a multi-dimesional musician, composer, performer and business owner. He a is prolific composer and recording artist. He has arranged and recorded 17 solo releases, and through his company, Romantic Sax Music, has sold nearly 500,000 units, primarily person-to-person, face-to-face, through the street festival and art show market.
He has recorded with, and features on his recordings, some of the West Coast's finest musicians, including Garth Webber (Miles Davis, Robben Ford, Boz Scaggs, Bonnie Raitt), Steve Weingart (Chaka Khan, Eric Marienthal, Ernie Watts, Warren Hill, John Pattituci, Dave Weckl), Red Young (Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Sonny & Cher, Dolly Parton, Eric Burdon), Mike Valerio (Los Angeles Philharmonic), and many others.
Mark is known for his warm, rich tone, and his mellow and romantic style. And it's no wonder, because stylistically Mark's first sax heroes were Paul Desmond, John Klemmer, and Grover Washington, Jr. Compositionally, Mark's style tends toward the iconic familiar, and again no wonder since his other major musical influences have been The Beatles and the jazz supergroup, Weather Report.
