Same Man, Different Person

Story Behind The Song

I was driving from South Carolina to Nashville listening to Marc Broussard when I drove over an overpass with black smoke billowing out from below. Upon returning to Nashville an old boyfriend showed up unannounced and got me thinking about the idea of bridges burnt and whether or not I wanted to cross back over it, since it will felt like it was on fire, and into a relationship with him again. I questioned whether he was the same or if he had changed any of his habits and attitudes that caused me to leave him. I knew I was a very different from when we were together so the song reflects on whether the two different people would work out a second time. In the end, I realized it would never work and it would be best not to give him a second chance so I cross over the burning bridge again.

Lyrics

I crossed over the burning bridge on my way home
The blackened smoke like fingers saw I was alone
I drove fast and curious and I listened to Broussard
I didn't know around the band you'd be standing in my yard

I'm still shaking but not like before
I'm still questioning how to end this war
I can't measure water flown beneath the bridge
I can't bring it back
I am not the same I have changed
Now I have to ask, yes I have to ask

Are you the same man but a different person
Are you the same man but a different person
A different person

I am so surprised by these butterflies
oh they're still there
They're still there when I see you they're still there
I am taken back to the good times
Oh the good times
Should I forget, should I forget the bad?

Oh I'm still shaking but not like before
I'm still questioning how to and this war
I can't measure water flown beneath the bridge
I can't bring it back
I am not the same I have changed so I have to ask, Yes I have to ask
Are you the same man but a different person
Are you the same man but a different person
A different person

I am not the same I have changed
Have you, have you
And could these different people
Have the same view
The same view, the same view

Are you the same man but a different person
Are you the same man but a different person
A different parson

I crossed over the burning bridge
On my way home
