Story Behind The Song
I'd seen a few briefs looking for country songs with 'Traditional themes but told in a new way, using conversational language and avoiding obvious rhymes' - so I wrote a song about writing a song!

Lyrics
A Cup of Coffee (Words and music by Alan Gillis)
Intro verse
I sat down to write a love song
Looking for some fresh ideas
Trying to write the same old story
But in a new way
Verse 1
I took my problem to the girl next door
She just moved in last week
She offered me a coffee then said
"Write about me. Why not write about me?"
I told her I hardly knew her name
She said "it's time you did -
Let's have another coffee we can
Pretend we're on a date - our very first date"
Chorus
I swear the girl can read my mind
And I know she believes when I say
I've been looking for real love all my life
I found it today - I found it today.
Verse 2
I wanted inspiration
Looking for a spark of light
Her very first line "would you like a coffee?"
Wrote the rest of my life - the rest of my life
Is this the way love happens
When you're looking the other way?
Creeping up behind when you least expect
The night to turn into day - steal your heart away
Repeat chorus
Bridge
Now she's every song I write, a new song every day
Who'd believe a cup of coffee would turn out this way?
Instrumental break
Chorus
I found love today
