Once They Get Away They're Gone

Story Behind The Song

This song was inspired by a movie listing at Broadjam where the central character - a singer songwriter who had recently separated from his wife becomes a busker. He looks back at letting love get away. All those precious things that were a part of his life he took for granted and in the end lost them all. At the end of my marriage the key symbolic moment came when my ex-wife decided to throw a yard sale on our front lawn to sell off all the things we had accumulated together over the years that we would not be taking away. It was very painful to witness. Once they get away they're gone - never to be seen again.

Lyrics

Once They Get Away They're Gone

Once they said hello
Everywhere I'd go
People smiled and knew my name

Now those things are gone
Seems they've move along
Left me singing to the rain

Once they get away they're gone
Once they get away they're gone
Once they get away they're gone

There's a sign out on the lawn
That says I don't belong
And everything I once called mine

Lies scattered on the ground
There's a crowd that's gathered round
Picking through the bones of time

Once they get away they're gone
Once they get away they're gone
Once they get away they're gone

And oh when it's cold outside
I still feel the warmth of your sweet touch
But thinking of this now is just too much
Oh I
I let it get away
What I would give to have it all again

Instrumental Break

And oh when it's cold outside
I still feel the warmth of your sweet touch
But thinking of this now is just too much
Oh I
I let it get away
What I would give to have it all again

Now those days are done
Every setting sun
Darkens to a world of pain

So hold on to what you love
If you let it go it's gone
And you'll never get it back again

Once they get away they're gone
Once they get away they're gone
Once they get away they're gone
