Walking On Fire

Story Behind The Song

A friend invited me to join a "Fire Walk" he was conducting and I had to laugh, remembering my childhood was sort of like walking on fire. That led to this song. I actually did walk on fire at my friend's invitation - only once!

Lyrics

Papa's in the kitchen, comin' off a binge,
Mama's breakin dishes, screaming where the hell you been?
Kids are on the front porch, trying to kill some time
Waiting for the storm to blow, before they go inside
I come down the street see what's going on
I take a 180, then I'm gone

Aunt Kate's at the front door bangin' on the glass
Says she wants to come inside and kick my daddy's ass
Says he drank up the insurance after grandma died
Dad's feeling no pain, drinking Ballantyne
She comes down the hallway, they wrestle to the floor,
I turn off the Lone Ranger and I'm out the door

I'm walking on fire. Walking through the flames
Walking on fire. I'll never be the same
I'm walking on fire. Walking through the coals

I never read the bible so I saw the flick
I can't remember everything but Jean Simmons sure was slick
Nuns used to tell my mother I was their favorite kid
But every time they lost it, seems they chase me with a stick
They'd come down the aisle see what page I'm on
They'd see the Marvel Comics and I was gone

I'm walking on fire Walking through the coals
Walking on fire Good for the soul
I'm walking on fire Walk right through the flames
I'm walking on fire

Going down to WhiteHall Station, 1966
Didn't go to Canada, Now I'm in a fix
There takin' out half my teeth, shaving off my head
Talkin' bout the new recruits bound to end up dead Raise my right hand swear what side I'm on
They point me to train, Then I'm gone.

I'm walking on fire Walking through the flames
Walking on fire. They say no pain no gain
I'm walking on fire Walking through the coals
Walking on Fire

I'm walking on fire. Walking through the flames
Walking on fire. I'll never be the same
I'm walking on fire, Walking through the coals Walking on fire 'till I get old.
